Media: bamboo, rattan strings, various shiny objects
Designed
to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses or, in older times, from a fire
lighthouses are used as an aid to navigation to mark dangerous coastlines,
hazardous shoals and reefs, But also safe entries to harbors. Once widely used,
the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of
maintenance and replacement by modern electronic navigational aids.
The
work that I had produced is a public installation in form of a stylized
lighthouse that would be a symbolic connection with the local community. On the
top of the lighthouse where signal lamp usually stands I’ve placed a lot of
small shiny objects that are no longer in use. These objects are collected from
people that are participating and working together with me on the installation.
The main idea of the project is to produce a symbolic lighthouse that would
(with a help of the sun beans) reflect a spirit of community that I was living
and working with during the period of festival. Furthermore, the lighthouse
should emphasize environment in which it is set and different emotions that
each particular person experiences when standing on the top of the lighthouse.
So, for me art does not lie in the object per se, but in the feelings and
impressions that we can sense with through it. The lighthouse is not just a
piece of art, than also, even more important, a tool for revivification of art
in everything and everyone that consorts whit it.
